If I had to describe this Fic with TWO words, it would be: Sllllooooooowwwwww Buuurrrrnnnnnnn….
And man, oh man….my heart can not….CAN NOT take slow burns!!! 😫😭😭😭
But I didn’t know!
Like a total dweeb I just dove right in not even bothering to check to see if was a slow burn or not. (Why do I forget to check these things!? XD) So by chapter 22 of book one, I was like….WAIT…. 🤔........😲
But of course, by then I was way too invested into the story, and just had to keep going. By this far in, I just gatta know what happens, ya know!?
The author’s description reads: Katara is 18 and the Southern Watertribe has been uneasy allies with the Fire Nation for the last 100 years. When Katara's tribe faces a food shortage, she takes a drastic step to ensure survival; enrolling herself in The Prince's Choice, a competition in the Fire Nation where Prince Zuko will choose a future wife from 35 girls. Really, overall this is a good story. It gives us so many characters, and I am VERY IMPRESSED with how many the author made! Just the thought of trying to keep up with so many characters as you write a story, boggles my mind! I mean honestly, from their names, to their personalities, their background stories, what each of them looks like, etc, etc.. It’s very impressive. I would just love it SO MUCH more if it wasn’t a slow burn is all. ^_~
At first Zuko did seem a bit OOC to me, but now that I’m more into the story, I really think that has more to do with the fact that this Zuko has been through a totally different scenario than our canon Zuko was. So it’s not necessarily that he’s OOC, but more like this is just a different Zuko due to different circumstances, if that makes sense? But even that unsure feeling goes away by the middle of the story, so it’s all good. ^_^
I really appreciate how the author will go into detail about who is wearing what, because my movie mind LOVES and appreciates details like that for sure.
As you read in the author’s description, it’s a “game” Katara is in “fighting” to win the Prince’s hand. And I was REALLY HOPING, he was going to choose a winner by the end of book 1, but alas, it is not so! The game goes on!
(No, that’s not a spoiler, it’s a head’s up! ^_~ I know I always appreciate a heads up. So…there ya go. ^_^ If you consider that a spoiler, I’m sorry. ♥)
Its KILLING ME to find out what is going to happen next and to see when this game will FINALLY be over!? Or will this game actually last all the way until book 3!? O.o (Please God, no. lol.) I just don’t know. I have no idea…. I will find out though. XD
The author also does tell us that they based this story upon The Selection series by Kiera Cass, but I’m not familiar with the show (or book?) at all, so I’m just taking the story itself for what it is and “enjoying” it as I go. (Quotations are only there cause slow burns KILL me.)
I’m about to wrap up chapter 30 of Book 1 and am REALLY looking forward to Book 2, as I’ve been told by numerous people that Book 2 is even better. ^_^ So I’m really looking forward to that!
I will definitely update this review once I’m all caught up to where the author is at. :)
